What makes a great instrument?
Response, volume, balance, clarity, playability,
intonation, dynamics, subtlety, beauty, light weight
and some qualities that defy definition.

suntan finish

I’ve been studying great instruments for over 25 years now,
repairing, rebuilding, setting up
and coaxing the best sound out of them.

My favorite great guitars have
always been from the 1920s to 1940s.
These instruments have common details:
red spruce tops
hide glue for wood to wood joints,
thin plates and thin finish
with light weight construction.
The sound is amazing. Big, bold, woody and so open.

No 41

My goal is to build guitars with that type of sound
with the playability and adjustability that
a modern player requires.

No 41

No 41 In order to achieve my goal I feel that hide glue for all the
wood to wood joints is essential.
It takes a little more time and care than using
bottled glue but I feel the results are definitely worth the extra work.

I have a very nice stock of red spruce tops and braces.
I also have some nice sitka and engleman but I'd have to say
that red (adirondack) spruce is my favorite.

Other features I prefer are ebony bridge/fingerboard/pins, bone nut/saddle,
wood binding, Waverly tuners, stainless steel frets and an adjustable truss rod.

I also want to listen to what you are looking for and make sure that
all the right options are chosen for achieving the sound and feel you want.

I'm open to building any standard body size or making a new design just for you.
I can also copy a neck size that you know and love or use your preferences
to make a neck that will feel perfect.

Inlay can be anything from nothing to simple dots to 45 style and beyond.
Standard patterns or custom designs to make your guitar uniquely yours.
